Specializing in harmonious relationships between horses and humans

ABOUT

Jodine Carruthers

For as long as I can remember horses any size, any shape, anywhere, have intrigued me. The idea that these magnificent prey animals allow us to share their world and ride upon their backs fascinates me. As a life long student of the horse I have found a great diversity in my experiences and learned that horses will always have more to teach me. To be able to share these lessons with others and through education and communication improve the lives of both humans and horses is a great gift that I am thankful to have.

My many years in the horse industry cover a wide range of experiences. I have been an active member of Pony Club and a groom in the Arabian show world. I have been a trail guide in Mexico and trained wild horses at Return to Freedom Wild Horse Sanctuary. I have taken a variety of clinics and workshops including Natural Hoof Care and Reiki Level 1. From these and many other experiences I have grown as a horsewoman as well as on a personal level.

A large portion of my time has been spent enjoying my love of the hunter/jumper industry. Growing up in BC I was very active on the show circuit. I competed successfully throughout BC as well as Alberta on the “A” circuit in both hunters and jumpers. After graduating from high school I spent the winter as a rider/groom at Spruce Meadows. My desire to gain further experience and education in the industry led me to work as an Assistant Trainer at Far West Farm and Rancho Ravello, both prominent “A” show barns in California. The technical knowledge and skills it takes to achieve unity and harmony constantly challenge me to better myself.

For me, horses have always been my best friends as well as my sports partners. I chose to go to the Monty Roberts International Learning Center to learn about their language of “Equus”. A weeklong Join-Up & Follow-Up Clinic led to a desire to learn as much as possible about these wonderful animals. I continued on, graduating from the Monty Roberts Introductory Course and the Monty Roberts Instructor Course. I received a partial scholarship for the Instructor course and also spent time as an Instructor and Assistant Instructor at the Monty Roberts International Learning Center. I have taught Join-Up clinics, Follow-Up clinics and Introductory Courses. Understanding the horse’s body language as well as the psychology of the horse is such an essential part of communicating with horses.

Recognizing and acknowledging the individuality of each animal is so important in creating a bond based on trust and respect. I have attended numerous Inter Species Communication Workshops to fine tune my communication skills and become aware of the subtleties and nuances of creating harmony in my relationships. To be able to understand each horse’s unique personality is a great asset in achieving true partnership.

Harmonious Horsemanship

Harmonious Horsemanship began as Lost Lake Equestrian in 2002. It started out as a small business that allowed me to share my knowledge of horses with the public. Over time I have become clearer on both the need and importance of offering services specializing in harmonious relationships between horses and humans. As I developed a foundation of services that take natural horsemanship to the next level by working with the body, mind and spirit of the horse my work evolved into Harmonious Horsemanship. The services I offer range from teaching and riding in the hunter/jumper industry to solving behavioural issues to starting young horses and teaching clinics.
